Laís Machado (Salvador, 1990) is a transdisciplinary artist with a bachelor’s degree in Performing Arts from the Federal University of Bahia, where she lives and works. Through her multilingual and immersive projects, their work traces unlikely cartographies—mappings that connect the intimate to the cosmogonic. The variety of media, materials, and practices that underpin their production is rooted in themes that question representations of identity, the Afro-diaspora, colonial trauma, and the boundaries between science and imagination, between the personal and the historical, and between the museum—private—and the collective —geographic and urban—pointing, above all, to the historicity of the materials they use and interrogate, revealing other possibilities for conceiving their use. For Laís Machado, everything is material. Without establishing a hierarchical distinction between materials and operators, their practice adopts a scientific perspective, developing methods and investigating how each element behaves and how it might behave differently. Among their most notable works is *Sumidouro n.2 – Diáspora Fantasma* (2023), a kinetic installation co-created with Diego Araúja, commissioned for the 35th São Paulo Biennial. Their work features a constant process of memory-making, which manifests itself through myriad provocations embodied in practices as diverse as imagined history, counterfactuals, neuromythologies, thought experiments, and geological samples as geopoetic artifacts. In Water Fossil (2025), the artist reinterprets their work *Theaomai* (2020) and re-presents sculptures carved from rocks found in the rivers that flow through Salvador and were transformed into sewers by the national urban development project. In Song of the Daughters of the Waters (2019), they recreate the origin of the universe based on the Yoruba mythology of bird women, fictionalizing a revolutionary and feminist future, and conclude the video art series that began with Elegy of the Daughters of the Waters (2018). In their most recent work, the book-object *What Is a Black Person When They Are Neither God Nor Miserable* (2026), they explore, through a diary-object, the psychological suffering that has fueled their artistic journey—like a third-person autopsy of a Black, non-binary figure. In 2016, they co-founded the ÀRÀKÁ Platform with Diego Araúja, a research space dedicated to contemporary art created by Black people, which in 2026 will celebrate ten years of consistent production in hybrid artistic languages. Her works have been exhibited at the 35th São Paulo Biennial (2023), SESC Pompeia (2022), Caixa Cultural (2025), and the Akademie für Theater und Digitalität (Germany, 2026). Currently, in partnership with Diego Araúja and Andrea Martins, he is developing the Novo Merindilogun project, an oracular device activated by brain waves that combines ancestral oracular technology with electroencephalography in a responsive space. The first phase is scheduled for the second half of 2026.
